Why Referral or Co-Counsel Arrangement?
You are a busy lawyer, in-house counsel, attorney, solicitor or legal consultant whose practice focus is transactional or non-contentious business, or perhaps a litigator who by choice, conflict or different practice experience, would prefer to refer your client to a litigation boutique which has experience in practice areas relevant to a client dispute.
Our lawyers are often consulted and retained in the practice areas outlined on our Homepage, including these practice areas:
- We can act for and regularly are retained by those seeking injunctions and other urgent judicial remedies and by those who are responding to (defending) such orders of the court. We can also advise and act for those who are not parties to existing or intended legal proceedings, but who are subject of a court order or affected by it.Our lawyers have worked with local and international businesses as well as individuals, purchasers, vendors, landlords, tenants, builders, contractors, agents and insurers with respect to a wide variety of real estate issues. We have the experience and the business-minded approach necessary to provide efficient and effective solutions with respect of any real estate issue. Our lawyers have acted in Ontario and other jurisdictions for small and mid-sized Ontario partnerships, limited liability partnerships (LLPs) and joint ventures. We also can act for US based clients and with their US Counsel in Ontario litigation and in international arbitration.Having been involved in a number of summary judgment motions our team has developed a timely and efficient process to determine the best way forward in legal proceedings – including a determination whether a motion for summary judgment, rather than a traditional trial, would be proportionate, more expeditious and a less expensive means to achieve a just result in the case.
- Divorce and separation often call for advice and representation to protect, preserve and realize your participation and interests in a business, whether through a corporation or a partnership. Our core practice areas include family law and business litigation. We have lawyers that work together to provide you with efficient and cost-effective representation in both related practice areas. We have considerable experience acting for clients outside Ontario in legal proceedings commenced in Ontario. Some of our lawyers have acted for clients based in the US and in Europe and one of our lawyers has acted for clients based in China. Our lawyers can act in both large and complex debt collection matters to enforce creditor’s rights. Our lawyers seek cost efficient debt recovery before and after judgment is obtained. Our lawyers have acted in Ontario and other jurisdictions for small and mid-sized Ontario corporations, partnerships and joint ventures, shareholders, directors, officers, executives and creditors. We also can act for US clients and with their US Counsel / Attorneys in Ontario litigation and in international arbitration.
Keep Your Valued Clients
We respect referrals and your relationship with your client.
We offer a free initial consultation during which we can discuss which retainer agreement best suits your client: a referral or co-counsel retainer. The nature of the dispute often requires the continued involvement of the referring lawyer, especially in matters with a cross-border or international dimension, where there are proceedings in more than one jurisdiction or where issues of choice or law, jurisdiction or forum remain to be considered. In other circumstances, where the referring counsel has a conflict, we would report directly and only to the client. We are open to considering a referral fee arrangement consistent with our governing ethics requirements.
